As a starting freelancer, you probably want to have everything you have ever done in your portfolio to show to clients. Even though you may think this will benefit you in that it will help you gain clients in just about anything you have been able to do, this just isn’t the case. I am going to explain why you should focus your portfolio toward work that you want to get as a freelancer, not work you have already done, and provide a few tips that will help you shape up your portfolio.
This week's open discussion question is focusing on marketing as a student freelancer. Have you found it difficult to market yourself as a student who moonlights as a freelancer? Have you run across any benefits or disadvantages when you explain that you are a student freelancer?
During the recent flooding and tornadoes that came through Middle Tennessee at the first of the month, it got me thinking about how unprepared I am, personally and professionally, for when disaster strikes. Granted, I am probably more prepared than most, I am still not completely prepared, and every time severe weather is in the forecast for my area, it makes me nervous knowing that if something happens that takes out everything I own, that not only will I have to recover personally, but my freelancing will also have to recover as well. Today I will outline some crucial things to keep in mind to help you become prepared for when disaster strikes.

We have all came across at one point or another the "student" factor when dealing with clients. Some clients don't want to work with students, while other clients seem to seek out students for the hopes of getting the project done at a lower cost. How do you handle when a client finds out that you are a student?

So it is that time of the semester where most of us will be doing final exams in the next few weeks. Finals are typically the busiest time of the semester for most students, and for the student freelancer, finding time to make sure all of your freelance work is taken care of in a timely fashion becomes even a greater challenge. Today I will share some pointers to help you make it through final exams, hopefully with good grades and happy clients all at the same time.
